One thing struck me. In the bright winter sunshine, the white blaze down its front helps to camouflage it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A woodpecker has also been a frequent visitor recently. The story of Sir Walter is fascinating. Although a ruin, the buildings are still very attractive. A few centuries ago, they were saved, preserved and cared for by a Scot (Earl of Buchan?) who lived close by and adopted the abbey grounds as his garden/hobby/playground.  So the fate of many old buildings - dismantled &amp;amp; stone used in projects elsewhere  - was avoided. The effects of weather on the massive structure are impressive.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;As a stronghold, the castle is also impressive, although roof, floors and some of the masonry has long gone.
